Have you ever lost a phone? It can be a scary experience, to know a device you rely on daily could be out in the wild, being used by anyone. It can be even more scary if you keep important documents on your phone. It’s a fear of most people to have their phone lost of stolen, but you can help alleviate this by installing Prey on your phone.
Prey is an open source project that is designed to protect all of your portable devices. It is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and both major mobile operating systems. Once installed, it will protect your phone by allowing you to send a text phrase to your phone to let the program know the phone is lost or stolen. From there, it will turn GPS on and send reports to your Prey account to let you track the phone.
While the basic Prey service is free, there is a paid service that allows you to have even more devices protected under an account, and more frequent reporting options. The only difference between the free and the paid services is the amount of devices you can protect, and the frequency of the reports. If you have several devices you carry with you, then the paid plan may be more suited to your needs.
Prey makes it nearly impossible to remove the program from the phone without knowing the access code, so there is no fear of the program being removed without you being able to use it. There have been numerous stories in the media of phones and laptops being returned from diligent owners who used Prey in order to protect their devices. Since the project is free and open source, there’s no reason for you not to have this just in case utility installed on your phone.
