Voice over IP calling has been growing in popularity with the release of services like Skype and Vonage for home phones. Now you can recreate that same experience by using Viber for your phone, which doesn’t give you a new phone number, but uses your current phone number in order to make calls over WiFi. If you’re tired of stingy minute plans from carriers, then give Viber a try. It is a complete texting and voice calling solution that will allow you to call other Viber members completely free.
The only downside of the application is that you cannot use it to call anyone who does not use Viber. This means having your friends adopt the application so you can save a few bucks is necessary. Group calling is also possible with Viber, which is something your traditional phone line won’t allow outside of three party calls. Since the service uses your carrier provided phone number, there is no need to register or sign up for any service. There are also no ads featured within the app, which makes it great to use.
The dialer provided within Viber is easy to use, with the End Call button clearly labeled. You can also mute and speaker phone, as well as send them to GSM so that you’re talking to them on your carrier’s network instead of 3G if you experience poor connection quality. This keeps you from having to end phone calls if you’re in an area where no WiFi hotspot is available and your 3G connection isn’t that great.
Overall, Viber is not a replacement for your normal phone number, but a complement to it that makes using your data as talk time as easy as can be. The only downside of the service is that people have to be using the application in order to talk to them via Viber.
